“How should we challenge exaggerated claims about AI’s capabilities and set realistic expectations?”

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) asked this question in a panel report on the future of AI research. They draw a connection to science communication

“The big question is whether, given the dynamics of social media and the search for clicks, professional opinions and peer reviewed research papers have any impact on dampening the overclaims and the ways they distort common understanding of where AI is, and what is its potential in one year, five years, ten years, etc. If we are currently left out of the conversations how can we change that?

…but (deliberately) don’t provide an answer to that question. IMHO, this is a question that not only AI researchers need to ask themselves.
